GULF OF MEXICO

Semi closed sea

The Gulf of Mexico is a semi-enclosed sea located in the North Atlantic between tropical and subtropical latitudes. It has a great diversity of tropical and temperate marine-coastal habitats and ecosystems that include estuaries, soft bottoms in shallow waters, rocky bottoms, reef communities and a large expanse of deep sea, which supports a wide diversity of living marine resources.

The Gulf of Mexico is one of the bodies of water of greatest economic importance within the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and the United States (USA), with a surface area of 1,623 million km2. More than 300 species support local fisheries (fish, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms and other invertebrates), with an annual production of around one million tons. In addition, it is inhabited by numerous marine species with unique ecological value in the trophic structure, such as seabirds, marine mammals and sea turtles.
