It has a great diversity of tropical and temperate marine-coastal habitats and ecosystems that include estuaries, soft bottoms in shallow waters, rocky bottoms, reef communities and a large expanse of deep sea, which supports a wide diversity of living marine resources.<\/p><p>The Gulf of Mexico is one of the bodies of water of greatest economic importance within the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and the United States (USA), with a surface area of 1,623 million km2. More than 300 species support local fisheries (fish, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms and other invertebrates), with an annual production of around one million tons.
